Innerviews, Music Without Borders

Extraordinary Conversations With Extraordinary Musicians

A Book By Anil Prasad

You’ve heard it said before: Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.  While the cover design of Innerviews, Music Without Borders is fairly minimalist and monochromatic, the contents are a colorful treasure trove of personal conversations and in-depth interviews conducted by music journalist Anil Prasad, with 24 great musicians of our time, across multiple genres.   Jazz, rock, hip-hop, world and electronica enthusiasts will all find interesting and inspiring insights here.

Included are interviews with:

Jon Anderson
Bjork
Bill Bruford
Martin Carthy
Stanley Clarke
Chuck D
Ani DiFranco
Bela Fleck
Michael Hedges
Jonas Hellborg
Leo Kottke
Bill Laswell
John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain
Noa
David Sylvian
Tangerine Dream
David Torn
Ralph Towner
McCoy Tyner
Eberhard Weber
Chris Whitley
Victor Wooten
Joe Zawinul

In addition to running his own interview website, innerviews.org, Prasad  is a contributing editor for Guitar Player magazine and writer for Bass Player magazine, two highly respected publications.  One could conclude that he must have an extraordinary way with people; while his questions often don’t fall too far outside the realm of standard music journalism, the answers he elicits from his subjects are extensive, in-depth and of a trusting, intimate nature.

Some highlights from the book that I especially enjoyed are:

John Anderson, of the band Yes, discusses the creative tension that fueled the success of Yes.

Icelandic popstar Bjork discusses her first creative inspirations as a child, when she made up songs in her head on her walks home from school.  She would make up songs about grown-ups, and also work through emotions with “The Happy Song” or “The Angry Song”.

Noa describes her experiences as a non-religious Jewish recording artist who has performed for the Pope many times.

Victor Wooten, founding member of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, talks about his family and the experience of performing with siblings.

…and so many other stories, straight from the mouth of the artists, with thoroughly enjoyable conversations containing perspectives and information you may not have heard before.  Find your copy of Innerviews, Music Without Borders by clicking this LINK .
