Ages and Ages at Old Rock House in St. Louis, March 26, 2014
I must confess, I’m one of those people that goes to a concert to hear the headliner and never really pays attention to the opening act line up until I arrive…that is until the Lake Street Drive concert at The Old Rock House in St Louis on March 26th. Whoa. I wasn’t expecting, well, anything from the opening act and was rewarded with an amazing new (to me) band that kept my feet tapping through their entire set list, Ages and Ages from Portland, OR. After the show I chatted with Sarah, percussion and vocalist in the band as she worked the merchandise table. I told her my opening band dirty little secret, and she laughed. We talked about how long Ages and Ages has been around. She said the evolution of the band has musically led them to where they are today.
This multi-member band uses every voice to create amazing harmonies in their songs. Add hand claps and foot stomps, and you’ve got yourself a deep, rich sound that nods to great rock music of the past. Songs like their newest “Divisionary (Do the Right Thing)” has a Mamas and the Papas feel while “No Pressure” has the same kind of kicked up beat as the Beatles “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da”.
I ended up getting both of their CDs that night, and have listened to them nonstop in my car. Their music just gives you hope.
